Clyde has gone to the DARK SIDE!!! Well...not exactly. I was visiting family recently and had just played footbag really hard for over an hour with my brother (he was competitive internationally years ago in footbag) and was famished. My mom said she had a coupon for a "meal deal" at Burger King and I immediately felt like I was in a time warp going back a quarter century, which is the last time I went to Burger King. I was excited to re-live that experience, but instead of just eating everything in the meal (and in the picture), I threw out the bottom half of the bun (I like the sesame seeds on the top), did not get cheese, ate half the fries, only had 4 oz of soda (soda, unfortunately, was part of my childhood experience that I needed to re-live) and ate about 3 times the salad that you see here on the plate. This made the meal horrible instead of instantaneously lethal. The burger went down from 920 to 800 Cal, the medium fries half of 480 Cal, and the medium root bear (I love root bear!) from 290 down to 45 Cal, and a little over 100 Cal (a lot!!) of plain salad. See Burger King's nutrition info here. My total was 1200 Cal, including a mountain of greens, instead of 1700 Cal with over twice the carbs and sugar. Crunching these numbers makes me realize I need to go do a bunch of crunches; yikes! It helps that I was in my recovery window, but the key message here is always do your best, even under the worst of circumstances or when re-living a childhood experience, and your body will thank you for any efforts you make. Nutrition is not just for health. It is also for enjoyment. The best of circumstances is when you can bring together a bit of both.
