The key things for neurological function are stable blood sugar, polyunsaturated fats and the two components to hydration: Proper water and electrolyte balance. The brain is the pickiest organ in the body: It wants primarily glucose (blood sugar) and not much else. Including a small amount of starch (whole grains) or at least some fruit and/or vegetables in each meal is therefore important. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly omega-6 and omega-3 fats are in very high concentrations in neurons where they synapse onto each other. Without eating these fats, neurons can not talk to each other very well, which is why studies show so many brain benefits from PUFAs. Hydration (huge volumes of pure water can be lethal), which includes one's electrolyte ballance (too much sodium in the diet is not good), determines how well neurons "conduct" signals. Dehydration can reduce sleep quality significantly (sleep is a brain function).
